About Yap State Flag

Yap State adopted a flag on May 30, 1980. It was first used on March 1, 1981 during Yap Day. The flag design symbolizes the traditional voyages and the historic trip for stone money by three cultural elements, a traditional Yapese canoe with sail hoisted, stone money and a five-pointed star.

About the Federated States of Micronesia Flag

The first version of the flag, which was adopted in 1962 and approved by the USA in 1965, had 6 stars. Each star represented Palau, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, the Marshall Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. Then the Northern Mariana Islands achieved commonwealth status and took off from the Federation on April 1, 1976 and the state of Kosrae was formed out of Pohnpei in January 1977. Then the number of stars was reduced to 4 when Palau and the Marshall Islands decided to go their own way. The new flag was adopted on November 30, 1978.
