The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) comprises four states, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap.

Yap State lies in the western most part of the FSM, stretching some 1200 kilometers from east to west, consisting of Yap Island and 134 other inhabited / uninhabited small islands and atolls.
Yap Island is located just 9 degrees north of the equator, southwest of Guam and northeast of Palau.

A cluster of four islands connected by roads, waterways and channels are surrounded by a broad fringing reef.
The total of land areas is about 100 square kilometers. Mangroves cover more than 80% of the coastal areas, but occasionally there are golden, sandy beaches.
