Currency
The U. S. dollar is the official currency, although Yap is famous for its
stone money which is still in use as a medium of exchange on certain traditional occasions.
Credit cards had been accepted by most of the hotels, restaurants, visitor-related businesses and the big stores in Colonia, however, since the Bank of Hawaii closed its door in the FSM
in November, 2002, many of the businesses currently are not accepting credit
card payment. Please prepare enough cash or travelers' check in US dollar before
entering Yap. You may ask for credit card cashing services from the only bank in
Yap, the Bank of FSM, with a cost of 2% or $10.00 which comes higher.
Car Rental and Taxis
Taxi, car and moped rentals can be arranged through your hotel or Nature's Way.
Communications
International telephone calls are available to/from any country in the world. FSM
Telecommunications Corp. is located in Colonia and open 24 hours. The most
convenient and costless way to make a long distance call is to purchase a
FSM Telcard that allows to you make a call
using your hotel room telephone unit or any unit nearby you.
The FSM postal services is part of the U.S. postal services system and they issue many beautiful postal stamps of Micronesia. The post office is located in Colonia.
Customs
Visitors may bring in 200 cigarettes and 1500 milliliters of liquor duty free.
Electricity
Standard 110 volt and U.S. type of outlets are used.
Entry Formalities
For tourists of 30 days or less a valid passport is required. All visitors must have an onward or return ticket.
Language
As English is the official language (lingua franca) of the FSM and therefore also of Yap State, most of the people speak English fluently. However,
indigenous languages in Yap State, such as
Yapese, Ulithian and Woleaian are spoken commonly. Daily life within the family,
in the communities and local governments are conducted in the local languages.
Some old people still speak Japanese.
Time Zone
Yap is in the same time zone as Guam, Saipan and Chuuk (GMT+10), one hour earlier than Palau and one hour later than Pohnpei and Kosrae.
What to Wear
In Yap going topless is common and socially acceptable for local women, but exposing the upper thigh is considered highly offensive
or impolite. Therefore, mini-shorts, mini-skirts and bikinis are not recommended in public.
Lightweight cotton/blends, knee length shorts, loose pants, short-sleeved shirts, t-shirts, tank tops and sunglasses are suggested.
